CCA – Center for Contemporary Art Kitakyushu, Japan 2002
How to describe an unknown territory? During two months members of gruppo A12 wander through the Japanese city of Kitakyushu, with the objective to draw a map of the city. The condition of uncertainty and ignorance typical of ancient explorers and geographers is artificially replicated. No one is allowed to use or even see existing maps and a GPS system is employed to mark relevant spots. A collection of objects, images, sounds and movies produced during the successive explorations complemented the sketch of the map. The sum of all these elements constitutes gruppo A12’s map of Kitakyushu, therefore revealing the interests, prejudices and ideological orientations of its authors.
